What is the Chinese Zodiac and how is it different from Western Zodiac signs?

The Chinese zodiac has 12 animal signs that repeat every 12 years. Each animal sign is linked to one of 5 elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal & Water) this is known as a fixed element.

Each lunar calendar year will be represented by one zodiac sign, additionally each year will have it’s own elemental cycle.

Chinese astrology differs from Western Astrology which has 12 zodiac signs that follow approximate 4.2 week cycle and are related to seasonal times and repeat every year.

There are 12 zodiac signs represented by animals and have a 12 year cycle following Jupiter’s orbit around the sun which takes approximately 11.8 years. 

Chinese Zodiac: ​is composed of 12 animal Zodiacs that are paired with one of the 5 elements (Earth, Metal, Water, Wood and Fire). During the Han Dynasty (200 B.C.) the 12 animal zodiacs became officially codified.

There are fixed elements associated with each zodiac sign that represent Yin and Yang character and personality traits. For instance the Ox has a fixed element of Earth which is Yin, though the personality of the Ox is more Yang demonstrating the dynamic balance of Yin and Yang within the Zodiac sign.

In addition each year has one of the 5 elements that changes on a two year cycle.  Therefore each year has a zodiac sign and element that rotates to be 5 cycles of 12, (60 years or a sexagenary cycle). Gānzhī (干支) Reaching the age of 60 is called Dà shòu or Big birthday and is considered rebirth.

The yang signs are: Monkey, Tiger, Rat, Horse, Dragon, and Dog

The yin signs are: Rooster, Rabbit, Pig, Snake, Ox, and Goat.

If you were born in January or early February, double check the dates for the start of the Zodiac year.  You may have more influences from the previous year because of conception and developed under a previous zodiac sign. Similar to being born on the cusp according to western tropical astrology. It’s important to know that we hold pre-birth energies within us that interact under the influence of Yin and Yang.
